Monthly Meetings and Other Events
2018-2019

Because of bad weather in the winter, we will for the  2018-19 year be holding meetings in July and August instead of in January and February. Unless otherwise noted, general meetings will be held the first Wednesday of the month for ten months of the year, July through December and March through August.  Meetings begin at 7 p.m.and are generally held in the MWRA Community Room at the Nut Island Facility located at the tip of Houghs Neck (at the end of Sea Ave.) The room is located on the second floor and an elevator is available.  Programs start at 7:30 p.m.

August 1, 2018 at 6pm.  Garden Party for members at home of member Donna Berry.

September 12, 2018 at 6:30pm.  Annual Pot Luck Dinner at the home of member Elizabeth Goodman, 68 Sea Ave.   (Please note this is held on the second Wednesday.)

October 3, 2018.  An Apple a Day.  Nancy Riggs.  Riggs is a past president of the Holden Garden Club.  Her garden has been on numerous garden tours.  She will talk about the apple, its history, and the industry.  An apple tasting is included.

November 7, 2018.  Functional Landscaping.  Sam Monkhern.  Monkhern is Grounds Manager and Director of the Babcock Arboretum at Eastern Nazarene College.  He will highlight the importance of using plants that work together, are functional, and can grow in their specific environment as well as the need for bees, insects and birds.  We will also learn about the Babcock Arboretum, an arboretum with redwood trees here in Quincy.

December 5, 2018.  6-8:30pm.  Holiday Party to be held at the Fox and Hound, 123 Sea St., Quincy.  Fee of $25 due in advance. 

March 6, 2019.  Your Body in the Garden.  Susan Guest.  Guest, a movement educator, fitness coach and avid gardener, is a certified fitness instructor and teaches conscious movement classes.  The focus of her program is to produce long-lasting gardeners, to help us become more aware of the choices we have as we perform our garden tasks and to increase the  amount of relaxation and pleasure from gardening.

April 18, 2019 (Thursday) at 6:45pm.  Tri-Club Meeting.  The Annual Meeting of the the three Quincy Garden Clubs, to be hosted by the Wollaston Garden Club.  "Myths, Lies and All the Latest Dirt" with C.L. Fornari.  This down-and-dirty talk helps gardeners sort through the folklore and hype surrounding plants, practices and products.  C.L. Fornari is a creative gardening expert who transitioned from artist to garden communicator in 1995.  Please note the day and place: Wollaston Congregational Church, 48 Winthrop Ave, Quincy.

May 1, 2019.  Natural Gardening, Living Soils.  Todd Breitenstein, owner of The Grateful Gardener, Hanover, will give a talk on practical gardening with a slide-show presentation.  Bretienstein gives interesting and practical down-to-earth advice and answers questions.

June 1, 2019 (Saturday) at 9:00am Meet Me in the Garden.  Susan Guest (above) joins members working at Leo Kelly Park.

June 5, 2019 at 6:15pm.  Annual Plant Auction.  All proceeds go to the club's Community Beautification Program.  Public invited!  Location: St. Thomas Aquinas Hall, Houghs Neck.

June 22, 2019 (Saturday).  Summertime by the Sea House Tour.  10:00am - 2:00pm.  Tickets available and pick up tour maps on day of tour at Nut Island, 149 Sea Ave, 9:30am -12:30pm.  Refreshments, Boutique and Raffle.  Tickets $25 in advance/$30 day of tour.  For tickets/information call Carol at 617-471-2886 or Patti at 617-471-9771.

July 10, 2019.  SEED.  The movie. (Please note this is held on the second Wednesday.)

As many irreplaceable seeds are near extinction, the movie SEED reveals the story of passionate seed keepers as they wage a David and Goliath battle against chemical seed companies, defending a 12,000 food legacy.  Join us for a movie night to view this heartening (and frightening) story.
